How to Become Licensed as an Adjuster for the Insured

Insurance Adjuster, Counselor, or Solicitor - If a background information question is answered "yes"

Resident Adjuster for the Insured

  • File an Electronic Resident Licensing (ERL) application through the National Producer License Registry (NIPR) website. The application/license fee is $15.00 plus a $5.00 transaction fee. An application is valid for 180 days from entry into our database.
  • The NIPR "Help" web page includes User Guides and Walk-Throughs as well as a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Index.  For additional questions relating to electronic application submission, contact NIPR Customer Service at 855-674-6477.
  • An applicant working for an adjusting firm must respond “Yes” to the corresponding question on the application and provide the requested information.
  • Successfully complete the Michigan licensing examination.  If the examination is not passed within 180 days, the applicant must submit a new license application and fee, and reschedule their examination.  The DIFS Examination Information web page provides details regarding the examination process.

Non-Resident Adjuster for the Insured

Non-Resident adjuster applicants must be licensed in the state in which their principle place of residence or business is maintained for all lines of authority requested in Michigan.  In addition, if the resident state did not require the successful completion of an examination at the time of licensure, applicants must either take the Michigan examination or provide proof of successful completion of an equivalent examination from a state where they are currently licensed.  Applicants who need to take the Michigan examination should refer to our Examination Information page to review the examination requirements for Resident applicants.
