FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 8, 2023
(LANSING, MICH) Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) Director Anita Fox is reminding Michiganders who need health insurance to purchase a Health Insurance Marketplace plan by December 15, 2023 so that their coverage can start January 1, 2024. Michiganders can still enroll until January 15, 2024, but plans selected after December 15 will not provide coverage until February 1, 2024.
“December 15 is the deadline for enrolling in a Marketplace health plan so that it covers you and your family starting January 1, 2024. Open enrollment continues until January 15, 2024, but enrolling by December 15 will ensure you’ll start the New Year with comprehensive, high quality health insurance,” said Director Fox. "Even if you are happy with your current health plan, you should update your HealthCare.gov application so you make sure you are getting all the savings to which you are entitled. Call DIFS at 877-999-6442, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or visit Michigan.gov/HealthInsurance for more information on getting started.”
Open enrollment for 2024 health insurance began November 1, 2023 and runs through January 15, 2024. Nearly 140,000 Michiganders have already enrolled during this year’s Marketplace open enrollment period, an increase of almost 25% over this time last year.
Consumers must select a plan no later than December 15, 2023 for coverage to start on January 1, 2024. Plans purchased between December 15, 2023 and January 15, 2024 will provide coverage beginning February 1, 2024. Thanks to savings put in place by the federal government, health insurance may be more affordable for Michiganders. For 2023, more than 85% of enrollees qualified for a subsidy, saving an average of more than $400 per month, with many consumers able to get health insurance for less than $10 per month. There is also free local enrollment help available by visiting LocalHelp.HealthCare.gov.
Michiganders can shop for a health plan by visiting the Health Insurance Marketplace or by calling 800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325). During open enrollment for 2024 coverage, consumers will be able to choose from 169 health plans on the Marketplace. For the overall individual market, which includes off-Marketplace plans, 228 plans will be available.
To review available plans and rates, visit HealthCare.gov today and apply before Friday, December 15 to buy coverage that begins January 1, 2024.
