FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 13, 2025
(LANSING, MICH) October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding consumers that most health plans must cover breast cancer screenings at no cost under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
“In Michigan, more than 9,700 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2025 and an estimated 1,370 people will die of the disease,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “Early detection saves lives, and screenings are covered by most insurance plans without out-of-pocket costs. DIFS stands ready to help Michiganders get the most out of their health insurance and reduce barriers that may discourage them from seeking health care.”
Michiganders who need health insurance will be able to enroll during the Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment period that begins on Nov. 1. For more information about insurance options, visit Michigan.gov/HealthInsurance. This month, DIFS is also encouraging Michiganders to think “PINK” when it comes to getting the most out of their health insurance for important preventative care:
- P — Preventive Screenings: Mammograms and other preventive services are covered at no cost.
- I — Insurance Coverage: Michigan law requires coverage for diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitative breast cancer services.
- N — No Out-of-Pocket Costs: Most preventive screenings do not require copays or deductibles.
- K — Know Your Coverage Options: Open Enrollment for 2026 runs November 1, 2025 through January 15, 2026. Enroll by December 15, 2025 for coverage starting January 1, 2026.
Consumers with questions about health insurance can call DIFS at 877-999-6442, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or visit Michigan.gov/DIFS for more information and resources.
