(LANSING, MICH) The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS), in partnership with King Media, has received a Gold AVA Digital Award from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) for the department's innovative Patient’s Right to Independent Review Act (PRIRA) public awareness campaign. DIFS' campaign aimed to educate Michiganders about their right to free appeals of denied health insurance claims.
“This campaign exemplifies our mission to protect and empower Michiganders by ensuring they know their rights under PRIRA and have the information they need to navigate the health insurance system,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “Michiganders have the right to a free impartial, expert review of final health insurance claim denials to ensure they receive the health care services to which they are entitled. Consumers can reach DIFS by calling 877-999-6442, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by visiting Michigan.gov/HealthInsuranceAppeals.”
DIFS’ campaign generated 1.3 million impressions on social media, 3 million impressions through digital advertising, 5.4 million impressions through billboard advertising, and attracted 16,344 new users to Michigan.gov/HealthInsuranceAppeals.
In 2025, DIFS saw a 29% increase in PRIRA appeals compared to the previous year, showing that more residents are utilizing this important protection. With more Michiganders taking action through PRIRA, DIFS remains focused on educating consumers and ensuring fair access to medically necessary care to which they are entitled.
Michiganders with questions about PRIRA or other insurance issues can contact DIFS for free assistance Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., by calling 877-999-6442 or visiting Michigan.gov/DIFS. Consumers who wish to file an appeal can visit Michigan.gov/HealthInsuranceAppeals.
The AVA Digital Awards is an international competition that honors excellence in digital communication, recognizing creative professionals for outstanding planning, concept, direction, design, and production.
