Yes, if a candidate holds certain professional designations (CLU, ChFC, CPCU, AAI, CIC), or possesses a concentration of college credits in insurance from an accredited college. The candidate must submit a request in writing to our office and receive a written waiver before scheduling the exam. If the license held in your previous home state was surrendered less than 90 days ago, you do not need to take the Michigan licensing examination. Submit an electronic application via the NIPR website at www.nipr.com.
If the license held in your previous home state was surrendered more than 90 days but less than 12 months ago, you do not need a PE waiver. In that case, submit an electronic application via the NIPR website at www.nipr.com and successfully pass the Michigan licensing examination.
However, if your previous license was surrendered more than 12 months ago, you will need to successfully complete PE coursework and pass the Michigan licensing examination. In addition, you will need to submit an electronic application via the NIPR website at www.nipr.com.
Yes. In Michigan, PE coursework may be completed in a classroom setting or as a self-study course. Either method is acceptable.
A list of approved PE providers and coursework is available on the DIFS web page: Insurance Education - Search for Providers, Courses, Offerings, and Instructors. Click the down arrow to the right of "Course Category" to choose Pre-licensing Education Courses. The provider and course list allows the list to be sorted by instruction method and course classification.
The licensing candidate must take the initial examination within 12 months of the PE course completion date. If a passing exam score is not achieved by the end of the 12 months, the candidate has to take PE coursework again and earn a new Certificate of Completion.
No; those documents should be kept for your records. PE course completion information is sent to our office by the PE provider as an electronic file. The information populates your application in our database and will be matched to your examination score. DIFS Licensing staff will add PE Waiver information to your record in our database.
