MDCR and City of Lansing Team Up for Brown Bag Lunch Discussion on Racial Healing
January 17, 2019
Lansing, MI–The Michigan Department of Civil Rights and the Office of Lansing Mayor Andy Schor will host a public brown bag lunch discussion, “What Racial Healing Means to Me” on January 22 in the lobby of Lansing City Hall, 124 W. Michigan Ave. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The discussion takes place on the National Day of Racial Healing, a part of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation effort which is a national, community-based process of addressing the historic and contemporary effects of racism.
On this day, communities around the country seek to reflect on our shared humanity and the value of our differences while acknowledging the impact of a legacy of cultural messages and practices rooted in a racialized ideology.
“To acknowledge our own biases and to reflect on the impact of repetitive racialized messages are important first steps in beginning the healing work,” said MDCR’s Equity Officer Alfredo Hernandez, who will facilitate the community conversation. “We were born into a system we did not create, yet we all have a social responsibility to proactively work at dismantling barriers to diversity, equity and inclusion for all.
Lansing Mayor Andy Schor said the conversation is important to fulfilling his promise of making Lansing work for everyone.
“Lansing is a diverse community and we’re proud of the various cultural, ethnic, religious and personal experiences of our residents,” said Mayor Andy Schor. “This important conversation with the Department of Civil Rights will be an opportunity for open-discussion and growth.”
The event is free and open to the public. Participants are asked to plan to stay for the entire event.
