Much of the electric transmission grid in Michigan is managed by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) which is responsible for transmission grid operations across 15 states. In December 2024, MISO approved a batch of transmission line projects as part of its Long-Range Transmission Plan.  Included in these projects is a 345 kV line referred to as the Ludington-Denver-Tittabawassee & Nelson Road project ("the project"). The project will connect three substations in the mid/central lower peninsula to the Ludington station.  The largest part of the project features a 159 mile, 345kV line that will run from the Copperton substation to Ludington.

While an application for siting approval has not yet been filed with the Commission, community and landowner outreach has begun on the southern portion of the project.

The Commission has updated its filing guidelines regarding these projects and plans to initiate a rulemaking proceeding regarding transmission line siting applications and proceedings.
