Public Act 235 directs the Commission to prepare a report by Dec. 1, 2024, that examines the unique conditions impacting electric generation, transmission, and electricity demand in the Upper Peninsula with a focus on the UMERC RICE units and electric demand attributable to mining activities. The report must also identify options for reducing the carbon intensity of the RICE units and feasibility of deploying clean energy systems.
Commission’s Actions To Date
On February 8, 2024, the Commission issued an Order in Case No. U-21572 issuing guidance for Public Act 235 of 2023, Sections 51, Subsection 8.
On July 30 the Commission Heald a Public Hearing. The Recording can be found here.
On December 2, 2024, the Commission submitted the 2024 UP Energy Report to the Governor and legislative leadership as directed by PA 235.
