Sanico North Landfill (Nunica, Ottawa County)

Sanico North Landfill is a 17.5-acre site located at 17171 144th Avenue in Nunica, Ottawa County, and operated from the mid-1960s until the mid-1980s. The site operated as a landfill from the mid-1960s until the mid-1980s and accepted residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial waste.

On August 29, 2025, EGLE received a Baseline Environmental Assessment (BEA) for this property, which included groundwater data as high as 120 ppt PFOA (compared to 8 ppt) and 26 ppt PFOS (compared to 16 ppt). Other PFAS compounds were also detected. A BEA is a document that allows a person to buy or operate at a site without being held liable for existing contamination. Groundwater flows to the west-northwest towards Lloyds Bayou, approximately 900 feet away.

Drinking water information

EGLE, DHHS, and local health have reviewed residential well logs and determined there are no nearby drinking water wells in need of sampling.
