WHEREAS, on May 12, 1919 the state’s Legislature established the Michigan State Park Commission, the origin of the Michigan state parks system; and,
WHEREAS, in 1919, Interlochen State Park was established as the first state park by the Michigan State Park Commission; and,
WHEREAS, today’s Michigan state parks system has grown to 103 state parks and recreation areas encompassing nearly 300,000 acres, 138 state forest campgrounds, 276 historic buildings, more than 700 archaeological sites, 19 state harbors, hundreds of boat launches and thousands of miles of trails; and,
WHEREAS, the state parks system contains and protects many of Michigan’s exemplary natural features; and,
WHEREAS, there are over 27 million visitors annually, and six of the top 10 tourist attractions in Michigan are state parks, making them a critical asset to Michigan’s tourism economy; and,
WHEREAS, the parks system contributes immeasurably to residents’ quality of life, health and well-being, making Michigan a great place to visit, work, and live; and,
WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has created a robust website at Michigan.gov/StateParks100, with information on centennial programs, events, and other opportunities for the public to participate;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim 2019 as Michigan State Parks Centennial Year and commend its observance to all citizens by encouraging residents to get their Recreation Passport and visit, learn, and support Michigan state parks.
