January 21, 2026: Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day

WHEREAS, as individuals retire, they are more likely to spend increased time volunteering; and,
WHEREAS, older adults demonstrate a high rate of volunteerism, contributing their time, skills, and experience to a wide range of community organizations, civic initiatives, and charitable causes, thereby strengthening local communities and enriching the lives of others; and,
WHEREAS, it is important to retain the talents and skills of older adults who contribute to communities in many ways; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s Foster Grandparent programs provide low- income adults, 55 and older, challenging and meaningful volunteer opportunities in many counties throughout the state; and,
WHEREAS, partnering with schools, Foster Grandparent programs meet a variety of personal and community needs that make a positive difference; and
WHEREAS, in Michigan, Foster Grandparent volunteers contribute hours of service to children with special or unique needs, helping them overcome various educational and life challenges; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Behavioral and Physical Health and Aging Services Administration within MDHHS to raise awareness of Michigan’s Foster Grandparent program and to recognize the outstanding service of foster grandparent volunteers currently serving throughout the state providing a positive impact. Their mentoring and overall efforts have contributed greatly to the lives of many children and have helped strengthen our communities.
THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 21, 2026, as Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day in Michigan.
