Reinstatement of a Surplus Lines Agency License

DIFS Insurance Licensing staff will conduct background checks and review responses to the background questions.

Note:  All resident and non-resident surplus lines applicants must hold an active property and casualty license as a prerequisite to submitting an application for a surplus lines license.

Resident Surplus Lines Business Entity (Agency)

A resident surplus lines business entity (agency) may become inactive due to non-payment of the annual renewal fee by March 31, surrender of the license, or lack of an affiliated producer with an active surplus lines license.

Non-Resident Surplus Lines Business Entity (Agency)

A non-resident surplus lines business entity (agency) may become inactive for non-payment of the annual renewal fee by March 31, Suspension for Compliance, surrender of the license, or lack of an affiliated producer with an active surplus lines license.

  • An Electronic Non-Resident Licensing (NRL) application must be submitted through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website.  Please be aware that non-resident applicants must hold an active non-resident license in the state in which their principle place of residence or business is maintained for all lines of authority requested in Michigan.
  • The application must include affiliation of a producer with an active surplus lines license.
