(LANSING, MICH) The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) has received filings from nine health insurance companies to be included in the federally facilitated Michigan Health Insurance Marketplace for 2021, continuing Michigan’s tradition of having one of the most robust Marketplaces in the country.
“It is crucial that Michigan families are able to get the affordable health care coverage they need as we continue to feel the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “For the third year in a row, Michigan rate changes are below anticipated levels, and consumers will have a growing list of plans to choose from when shopping for health insurance coverage on the Marketplace.”
A new report from the National Center for Coverage Innovation found that Michigan experienced a 46% increase in the number of uninsured adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. DIFS continues to encourage consumers to take advantage of low and no-cost health insurance options that may be available to them now if they lost employer-based health coverage or experienced a reduction in income. For 2021, all companies that offered plans last year filed to offer Qualified Health Plans in the Michigan Health Insurance Marketplace:
DIFS reports that the average filed rate changes for individual market plans range from a decrease of 2% to an increase of 6% on a premium weighted basis. The Michigan Health Insurance Rate Change Request Charts are posted on the DIFS website. While Michigan utilizes the federally facilitated marketplace, DIFS is responsible for reviewing all plans and rates to ensure compliance with state and federal laws. Once DIFS has completed its review, approved rate changes will be posted.
DIFS is seeking public comment on these proposed rate changes. Comments should be sent electronically to DIFS-healthratecomments@michigan.gov and if submitted prior to July 31, 2020 will be considered in DIFS’ review.
When reviewing the charts, it is important to note that:
“DIFS is committed to providing transparency in the rate review process,” said Fox. “We welcome public input and are available for consumers if they have questions about their health insurance coverage.”
Open enrollment for Michigan’s federally facilitated Health Insurance Marketplace will begin Nov. 1, 2020 and close on Dec. 15, 2020, with coverage effective Jan. 1, 2021. Information about the Marketplace is available at www.healthcare.gov.
