FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dec. 1, 2020
(LANSING, MICH) The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding consumers that Michigan’s financial institutions remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic, while operating in accordance with the Pause to Save Lives order.
Your financial institution will continue to take steps to ensure the safety of customers and employees. In addition to requiring a mask or face covering be worn over the nose and mouth to conduct in-person business, financial institutions may limit hours or access to buildings, limit the number of people in lobby areas, or schedule lobby service. Others may require appointments while maintaining service through drive-throughs and ATMs. Please check your institution’s website for information, or you may wish to call or email the office or branch.
This may be a good time to look into your institution’s mobile application or online banking options, if you are not already using these services. Electronic services such as debit cards, credit cards, and mobile banking may be easier and safer options for consumers than passing cash from person to person.
The finances of many Michigan families and businesses have been affected by COVID-19. If you have concerns about your ability to make payments on loans or other extensions of credit, or the availability of loans or credit from your Michigan financial institution, we urge you to reach out to your institution by telephone or email as soon as possible. Your institutions are available to work with you and may offer accommodation during these difficult times.
If you have questions or disputes you cannot resolve directly with your financial institution, DIFS is here to help. Contact DIFS at 1-877-999-6442 and Michigan.gov/DIFSComplaints.
