(LANSING, MICH) With a weekend full of Independence Day celebrations around the corner, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is encouraging Michiganders to prioritize safety to help prevent accidents, protect friends and family, and keep the holiday fun going by reducing the risk of costly insurance claims.

“Fourth of July celebrations are a wonderful time to connect with loved ones, but they also come with risks that can often be avoided by taking simple precautions around your property or before heading out for holiday travel,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “By taking a few preventive steps and understanding your insurance coverage, you can safely focus on enjoying the holiday weekend.”

To help consumers stay protected, DIFS is sharing the following insurance and safety tips for Independence Day celebrations:

Homeowners Insurance and Safety

  • Keep grills at least 10 feet from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
  • Make sure embers are completely extinguished before disposing of ashes.
  • Only use fireworks if they are legal in your area and under the supervision of an adult at all times. Ensure fireworks are lit far away from structures, light only one at a time, and keep water or a hose nearby. Never use fireworks under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Check your homeowners insurance policy to understand your coverage in the event of fire caused by grilling or fireworks.

Auto, RV, and Motorcycle Insurance and Safety

  • Check your auto or motorcycle insurance policy to ensure your coverage is current and consider whether you need optional coverages like collision or comprehensive coverage in case of an accident, theft, or weather-related damage.
  • Keep your proof of insurance in your vehicle or accessible through a mobile app in case you need to report a claim while traveling.
  • Inspect your vehicle before heading out, whether it’s a car, RV, or motorcycle. Check tires, lights, brakes, and fluid levels to avoid breakdowns.
  • Ensure RVs and trailers are properly registered and insured, especially if being used for camping or long-distance travel.
  • Avoid distractions like texting or using mobile apps while driving.

Boat Insurance and Water Safety

  • Make sure your boat insurance is active and covers liability, property damage, and medical costs in case of an accident.
  • Always wear a life jacket. Even strong swimmers are at risk in unpredictable conditions.
  • Never operate a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Know your surroundings and stay alert for other boats, swimmers, and no-wake zones.
  • Supervise children at all times. Drowning can occur within a matter of seconds.

Consumers should reach out to their insurance company or agent for help with their existing insurance policies. Consumers can find a licensed insurance agent or agency by using the DIFS Licensee Locator Tool.
