The Michigan Public Service Commission reminds customers of Upper Michigan Energy Resources Corp. in the western Upper Peninsula that a public hearing is set for Tuesday, Jan 11., on the utility's long-range integrated resource plan (IRP) for providing electricity.

Commissioners and MPSC Staff will conduct the public hearing on Upper Michigan Energy Resource Corp.'s (UMERC) IRP 4-7 p.m. Central Standard Time Tuesday at Fornetti Hall at Bay College's West Campus, 2801 U.S.-2 in Iron Mountain.

MPSC Chair Dan Scripps, Commissioners Tremaine Phillips and Katherine Peretick, and MPSC Staff will be on hand to hear from customers of UMERC and other members of the public about the utility's IRP, which outlines how the electric utility intends to provide reliable service over the next 20 years. MPSC Staff will provide an overview of UMERC's proposal.

The goal of the hearings is to take public comment on UMERC's long-range forecasts for ensuring reliable service over the next 20 years. IRPs were established under Michigan's 2016 energy laws and must be filed by each electric utility whose rates are regulated by the MPSC. UMERC filed its application for approval of its IRP in October, and it remains pending before the Commission in Case No. U-21081.

Background information about integrated resource planning is available in an MPSC issue brief. More detailed information about the UMERC IRP hearing is available in the MPSC's public notice.

People who have mobility, visual, hearing, or other disabilities should contact the MPSC's Executive Secretary at 517-284-8090 in advance of the forum to request assistance.

As a COVID-19 safety measure, Bay College requires all visitors to campus to wear a face mask when indoors on college property. Public hearing attendees unable to comply with this requirement are encouraged to file comments in writing instead.

Comments by attendees will become part of the public record, and a transcript of the hearing will be filed in the case docket. Written and electronic comments may be submitted to Commission by email at mpscedockets@michigan.gov or mailed to Executive Secretary, Michigan Public Service Commission, 7109 W. Saginaw Hwy., Lansing, MI, 48917. All comments should reference Case No. U-21081. A transcript of the public hearing will be filed in the case docket.
