The Michigan Public Service Commission announced today that it will hold two initial public engagement sessions on implementation of Public Act 233 of 2023 (PA 233), which grants the MPSC siting authority for large solar, wind and energy storage projects, and launched a new webpage that will provide information as the Commission works to put the new law into practice.
The Commission on Feb. 8 kicked off its efforts to implement Michigan’s 2023 energy laws. Case No. U-21547 in the MPSC’s E-dockets deals with PA 233, which provides siting authority to the MPSC for utility-scale solar, wind and energy storage projects under specified conditions.
The first two engagement sessions, open to the public, will be conducted via livestream on Microsoft Teams March 7, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. and March 19, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.
Details on how to join the meeting will be posted on the new MPSC webpage dedicated to implementation of PA 233. The web page will be updated regularly throughout the engagement process and includes background information about PA 233, links to relevant materials and answers to frequent questions. It will include links to Commission orders and actions, upcoming meetings and other information.
The Commission’s Feb. 8 order directed MPSC Staff to hold meetings to engage with experts, local units of government, project developers and other interested persons to consider issues relating to application filing instructions or guidelines, the potential use of consultants and assessment of application fees, pre-application consultations, guidance for use in the development of compatible renewable energy ordinances, and any additional issues that may arise during the engagement process. MPSC Staff must file recommendations on application filing instructions, guidance relating to compatible renewable energy ordinances, and other recommendations by June 21, 2024, followed by a comment period through July 17, 2024, with reply comments due Aug. 9, 2024.
