The Michigan Public Service Commission will hold a public hearing May 29 in Detroit as the Commission continues its work to broaden opportunities for public engagement in matters before the Commission and in Commission decision-making processes.

The public is invited to attend the town hall-style meeting on Thursday, May 29, 6-8 p.m. at Room L-150 at Cadillac Place, 3022 W. Grand Boulevard west of Woodward in Detroit’s New Center Neighborhood. The meeting is part of the MPSC’s efforts, launched in May 2024 in Case No. U-21638, to implement Public Act 231 of 2023.

MPSC Chair Dan Scripps, Commissioners Katherine Peretick and Alessandra Carreon, and MPSC Staff will be on hand to hear directly from customers of Michigan’s energy utilities and telecommunications providers on ways the Commission and can make public participation and input easier and more accessible.

“The MPSC recognizes that the decisions it makes have direct impact on utility and telecommunications customers’ lives and pocketbooks, and we are exploring ways to expand how the public can inform Commission decisions,” Chair Scripps said.

In addition to Commissioners and MPSC Staff, officials from two other agencies will be on hand and will give brief overviews of the roles of their agencies in matters such as utility rate cases:

  • Paul Isley, chair of the Utility Consumer Participation Board, which provides grants to qualified applicants that represent the interests of Michigan's residential energy utility customers in proceedings before the MPSC. Dr. Isley is associate dean at Grand Valley State University’s Seidman College of Business. Nishaat Killeen, also a member of the UCPB, also will attend.
  • Assistant Attorney General Michael Moody, chief of the division of the Michigan Department of Attorney General that advocates on behalf of utility customers. Moody is also the president of the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates.

Individuals with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations to participate in the hearing by contacting the Commission’s Executive Secretary at 517-284-8090 as far as possible in advance of the meeting.
