The latest episode of the MPSC’s monthly Behind the Meter podcast welcomes the newest addition to the MPSC: Commissioner Shaquila Myers, whose deep experience in policymaking in Lansing includes work on significant energy and telecommunications issues.
Commissioner Myers, a Detroit native and graduate of Oakland University, talks about her decades in public service, which include serving in key legislative staff positions and as chief of staff for Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, with whom she worked on expanding broadband access, and as a senior advisor to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Myers’ accomplishments also include helping pass the 2023 update of Michigan’s energy laws that significantly expanded the state’s clean energy goals.
Myers says on the podcast that she’s excited to be able to move from working to help pass significant policy into law to now working to fulfill those laws at the Commission.
“Rarely as a policymaker do you have the opportunity to watch implementation happen and not just watch — now I get a chance to be a part of that implementation,” Myers says. “Our careers are winding, and we never know where it’s going to take us, and to have this opportunity at this moment – it is quite an honor. But I’m also excited to delve into this realm.”
Governor Whitmer appointed Myers to the MPSC July 21 for a term ending July 2, 2031.
