The September episode of the MPSC’s monthly podcast Behind the Meter is out today, and it explores current issues in telecommunications in Michigan.
The podcast focuses on issues including broadband access, expansion and affordability, as well as efforts to close the digital divide with programs like Lifeline, a service that provides phone and internet discounts to income-eligible households to help keep Michiganders connected. In addition, the podcast explores what regulatory authority the Commission has over telecommunications providers and services.
Podcast host Mike Byrne, the MPSC’s Chief Operating Officer, and Commissioner Shaquila Myers speak with Ryan McAnany, Director of the MPSC’s telecommunications division, and Eric Frederick, the State of Michigan’s Chief Connectivity Officer and leader of the Michigan High-Speed Internet Office, which is focused on expanding fast internet service across the state.
The discussion delves into progress made so far on broadband expansion, challenges ahead and what residents and businesses can expect, particularly as the state works to leverage funding through federal initiatives such as the federal Broadband Equity Access and Deployment Program to reach areas with little or no access to broadband.
