The October edition of the MPSC’s monthly podcast Behind the Meter takes on a significant and timely topic: ensuring Michigan’s energy grid is prepared as more people choose to drive an electric vehicle.

Podcast host Mike Byrne, the MPSC’s Chief Operating Officer, leads a discussion with Commissioner Katherine Peretick and Michigan Chief Climate Officer Alessandra Carreon, a former MPSC commissioner.

They discuss the impact of electrification on the grid for new uses such as charging EVs at homes, businesses and other facilities, efforts to expand the number of charging stations across the state, the difference between fast chargers and slower chargers typical for residential charging, comparisons between the costs of owning and operating EVs compared to gas-powered automobiles, and more.

Peretick and Carreon also tell their own experiences as EV owners.

Peretick notes that most EV owners do the bulk of their vehicle charging while parked at home, and how the electric grid benefits by shifting electric usage to overnight. Even so, she’s seen a significant expansion of the number of public chargers available over three years she’s owned her Ford Mustang Mach-E, which has taken her as far as Chicago from her home in metro Detroit without needing to stop to charge.

“It’s a different mental shift when you have an electric vehicle,” Peretick says. “Most of my ‘filling up’ happens in my garage. Well over 80% of charging happens in my garage vs. public charging. I only need to stop at a public charger if I’m going on a really long trip.”
