MPSC podcast explains the long-term planning behind reliable, cost-effective electric service

Customer Assistance: 800-292-9555

Ensuring Michigan has enough electricity to meet customers’ long‑term needs is a core responsibility of the Michigan Public Service Commission. A new episode of the MPSC’s podcast takes listeners behind the scenes to explain and demystify integrated resource plans, or IRPs.

The MPSC’s Behind the Meter podcast explores IRPs, which utilities use to create a roadmap for the next 20 years or more, to ensure electricity providers have enough power generation sources to keep the lights on while addressing risks and uncertainties inherent in the utility industry. The role of IRPs is more important than ever as Michigan transitions to new, cleaner energy sources from older power plants fueled by coal.

IRPs help ensure reliable, cost-effective electric service, proving a long-range look at generating resources and when they need to be added or replaced, consistent with reliability standards. The MPSC takes a data-driven approach to reviewing utility IRPs to determine whether they represent the most reasonable and prudent means of meeting electricity demand and the clean energy standard, balancing reliability, affordability, environmental considerations, and other factors outlined in statute.

MPSC Chief Operating Officer Mike Byrne hosts the podcast, speaking with Chair Dan Scripps and Commissioners Katherine Peretick and Shaquila Myers. They outline ways the public can learn more about IRPs and provide input when IRP cases are being reviewed by the Commission.
