Alternative Gas Suppliers
With Gas Customer Choice, natural gas customers from businesses to residential homeowners are able to shop for natural gas from a diverse group of Alternative Gas Suppliers. Prospective suppliers that wish to sell natural gas at unregulated retail rates to customers participating in Michigan’s Gas Customer Choice program must obtain a license pursuant to Public Act 634 of 2002. Additionally, the MPSC has established licensing procedures for suppliers participating in the Commission-approved Gas Customer Choice programs.
Alternative Gas Supplier Licensing & Program Information
The MPSC does not currently register or license brokers or aggregators of gas service. The MPSC will hold licensed suppliers responsible for all marketing efforts conducted on their behalf.
Alternative Electric Suppliers
With Electric Customer Choice, customers are able to purchase their electric supply from Alternative Electric Suppliers. However, by law, participation in Michigan's Electric Choice program is currently limited to 10% of an electric utility’s average weather adjusted retail sales for the preceding calendar year. Prospective suppliers that wish to sell power supply at unregulated retail rates to customers participating in Michigan’s Electric Customer Choice program must obtain a license pursuant to Public Act 141 of 2000. Additionally, the MPSC has established licensing procedures for suppliers participating in the Commission-approved Electric Customer Choice programs.

Telecommunications Service Providers
Before a company can provide Basic Local Exchange Service in Michigan, it must obtain a license from the MPSC. Licensing applications are processed under Sections 301 and 302 of the Michigan Telecommunications Act. Additionally, U-11900 and section 211a of the MTA requires all providers of telecommunications services to register with the MPSC.
