Customer Choice
Prospective alternative gas suppliers (AGS) that wish to sell natural gas at unregulated retail rates to customers participating in Michigan’s Gas Customer Choice program must obtain a license pursuant to Public Act 634 of 2002. The MPSC does not currently register or license brokers or aggregators of gas service. The MPSC will hold licensed AGSs responsible for all marketing efforts conducted on their behalf.

Licensing Requirements
Applications to become a licensed AGS should be filed electronically via the MPSC’s paperless Electronic Docket Filing System (e-dockets). Suppliers should not e-file confidential information with their licensing applications but should provide the confidential material to the MPSC’s Retail Choice Staff.
To submit an application through the e-docket system, please call 517-284-8090, email mpscedockets@michigan.gov or reference the Help with Electronic Filings page to get started.
Alternative Gas Supplier Application
The September 11, 2014 Order in Case No. U-17580 approved a gas price comparison website and adopted changes to the approved gas customer choice tariffs for participating utilities. Any licensed AGS who is actively enrolling or marketing to customers must post offers to www.MI.gov/CompareMIGas and abide by the website's approved Terms and Conditions.
There are no application or license renewal fees. However, as a condition of licensure, an AGS is required to maintain a $100,000 bond or letter of credit with the MPSC.
