D. Sue Townsel, Royal Oak
D. Sue Townsel is a respected leader in health and education, committed to advancing health outcomes and educational equity in multicultural communities. She has successfully secured and managed funding from local and national organizations, corporations, and private donors, and collaborates with partners to develop, evaluate, and sustain impactful programs.
Sue currently serves as Project Manager at Corewell Health Children’s in Southeast Michigan, where she leads strategy, growth, and process improvement initiatives for Pediatric Subspecialties and the Toyota Way Forward Fund Project to improve care for pediatric patients with head injuries. Her work has earned recognition from the Food & Drug Administration – Detroit District Office, American Heart Association, Wayne State University School of Medicine, and the Michigan House of Representatives. She also serves on the Board of Visitors for Wayne State University and is a member of the Midwest Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
In 2022, Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed Sue Townsel to the Michigan Women’s Commission. Townsel served as chairwoman for a term in 2024-2025. She was reappointed in 2025 for a three-year term. Commissioner Townsel started volunteering with the Michigan Women’s Commission in 2018, adding a millennial voice to the commission and has supported sustaining the work of the commission.
Sue will be completing the global executive MBA at the University of Notre Dame in May 2026. She holds a Master of Science from Wayne State University and a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University.
