About the Rule 57 Water Quality Values

Water Quality Values apply to all surface waters in Michigan, unless site specific values have been derived. 

If the surface water body is designated and protected as a source (e.g., draws surface water) for a public drinking water supply, the human health Water Quality Values are not the same as the finished drinking water Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs). 

Surface water is any body of water found above ground, including rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, and wetlands.
