There are two major classes of firefighting foam: Class A and Class B. Class B is also called Aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) and is usually created using PFAS. It is a highly effective foam used for fighting high-hazard flammable liquid fires, like gasoline, oil, and jet fuel.

Michigan has not promulgated generic cleanup criteria for PFAS in soil or sediments under the Part 201 environmental remediation program.
Characterization of PFAS in soil and sediments is currently being evaluated on a site-specific basis. The department supports the development of residential, nonresidential, and recreational soil direct contact criteria on a site-by-site basis. Similarly, the department can assist in the review and development of site-specific PFAS criteria for sediments.
Laws and rules are set by the State of Michigan to regulate dredging action within the Great Lakes and Inland Lakes and Streams. Resources are available regarding the testing of dredge sediment.
