Treasury: Less Than a Week Left to Claim Michigan’s Home Heating Credit
September 28, 2026
All Applications Must Be Received by Sept. 30, 2026, Redeemed by Dec. 15, 2026
LANSING, Mich. – Qualified homeowners or renters have less than a week remaining to apply for Michigan’s Home Heating Credit, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury.
The Home Heating Credit helps reduce utility costs, freeing up funds for other essential needs. It is intended to support older Michiganders, low‑ to moderate‑income households, individuals who are deaf, disabled or blind, and disabled veterans.
All Home Heating Credit applications must be received by Sept. 30, 2026.
“As we move into another heating season, don’t miss your chance to apply for the Home Heating Credit,” said Chief Deputy State Treasurer Lance Wilkinson. “It’s a helpful way to reduce energy costs and keep more money available for other important needs. If you’re eligible, be sure to apply before the deadline. Assistance is available to help guide you through the process of claiming a credit.”
Residents can connect with a free tax preparation provider by calling 211, texting 898211, or visiting MichiganFreeTaxHelp.org. Local human services organizations, including United Way and Community Action Agencies, can also help residents find a nearby site.
Eligible individuals typically file a Home Heating Credit application when completing their individual income tax return. Applicants do not need to file a state income tax return to receive this assistance and may submit the application only.
The Home Heating Credit application form can be obtained at Michigan.gov/Taxes. Additional information can be found on the Home Heating Credit website.
Last year, the average qualifying household received $171 in assistance. Individuals applying should make sure it’s completed accurately to avoid processing delays.
Individuals who have been awarded a Home Heating Credit receive a State of Michigan Energy Draft that can be used to pay energy bills only. The draft must be provided to the heating provider, who will apply it to current or future heating bills.
As of Sept. 9, more than 139,000 households have received $28 million in Home Heating Credits. Yet around 54,000 households with claimed credits have yet to redeem about $10.1 million in drafts.
“If you received a Home Heating Credit, please don’t wait to redeem your State of Michigan Energy Draft,” Wilkinson noted. “That draft is only good until December 15.”
Treasury provides the heating provider with a 30-day grace period to submit the draft for reimbursement.
The Home Heating Credit will reopen during the 2027 individual income tax filing season early next year.
