May 5-11, 2024: Youth Apprenticeship Week

WHEREAS, this year marks the first National Youth Apprenticeship Week; and,

WHEREAS, Youth Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration that highlights the benefits and value of Registered Apprenticeship opportunities for youth, ages 16-24; and,

WHEREAS, Registered Apprenticeship is a workforce training model that provides paid, relevant work experience, related classroom instruction, and a United States Department of Labor national credential that allows workers to earn a living while acquiring the skills employers demand in a variety of occupations; and,

WHEREAS, employers, educators, labor unions, and other workforce stakeholders are launching Registered Apprenticeship programs that allow youth to earn competitive wages while obtaining the relevant classroom instruction, training, and experience to build strong careers; and,

WHEREAS, there are currently more than 8,400 active Youth Registered Apprentices in Michigan gaining knowledge, skills, and experience in industries such as construction, healthcare, manufacturing, public administration, and many others; and,

WHEREAS, increased awareness of Registered Apprenticeships among youth, educators, parents, employers, labor, workforce partners, and industry is needed, as well as opportunities to highlight the benefits of Registered Apprenticeships as a pathway to great careers; and,

WHEREAS, a platform is needed to give youth apprentices an opportunity to share their Registered Apprenticeship experience and how it has transformed their lives; and,

WHEREAS, Registered Apprenticeship sponsors, career and technical education programs, employers, labor unions, workforce agencies, and other partners are showcasing the value of Registered Apprenticeship Programs for youth, spotlighting how this proven training model creates a sustainable pipeline of skilled and diverse talent across multiple industries; and,

WHEREAS, Registered Apprenticeship provides affordable paths to secure careers and, in most cases, without the debt associated with the traditional college model and increases diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the workplace; and,

WHEREAS, it is important for employers to recognize that providing Registered Apprenticeship opportunities to young people, including those with disabilities, is an investment in the future of their business and community, as well as our state and nation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 5-11, 2024, as Youth Apprenticeship Week in Michigan.
