Dredging Projects

Laws and rules are set by the State to regulate dredging action within the Great Lakes and Inland Lakes and Streams. Resources are available regarding the testing of dredge sediment.

Permits are required for dredging submerged areas pursuant to Parts 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, Part 303, Wetlands Protection, and/or Part 325, Great Lakes Submerged Lands, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended.

Sediment testing may be required for certain projects to complete the Joint Permit Application, as outlined in Water Resources Division (WRD) Policy and Procedure WRD-048, Sediment Testing for Dredging Projects adopted on April 13, 2018.  The previous Policy and Procedure 09-018, Dredge Sediment Review, was rescinded on April 13, 2018.

A general summary of the various EGLE procedures and requirements regarding sediment testing and management that may apply to dredging projects in the vicinity of PFAS sites is contained in Sediment Dredging Guidance, including requirements for the disposal of dredged material. This document is explanatory only and is provided as information for dredge permit applicants.  Additional information:
