(LANSING, MICH) Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) Director Anita Fox has been named chair of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ (NAIC) Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee, which ensures Michigan has a strong voice in determining health insurance policy on the national level.

“It is an honor to serve in a leadership role for the NAIC’s Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee and to continue advocating for Michiganders on health insurance issues,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “Michigan is a leader in insurance policy, which is governed primarily at the state level, and I look forward to contributing to the NAIC’s nationwide efforts to support the health of consumers and provide access to affordable health insurance.”

The Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee serves as the NAIC’s health insurance liaison to the U.S. Congress, the White House, and federal agencies. The committee considers issues relating to all aspects of health insurance, including examining factors that contribute to rising health care costs and insurance premiums. It is also tasked with emphasizing equity considerations and the potential impact of health policy decisions on underserved populations.

In addition to serving as chair of the Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee, Director Fox was elected Vice Chair of the Midwest Zone, which represents 13 states and is part of the NAIC Executive Committee. She was also appointed to the following committees and work groups:

  • The International Insurance Relations Committee, which coordinates NAIC participation in international discussions on the development of insurance regulatory and supervisory standards and promotes international cooperation; and
  • The Special Committee on Race and Insurance, which is charged with examining and determining which practices or barriers exist in the insurance sector that potentially disadvantage people of color and/or historically underrepresented groups and will make recommendations on action steps to remove these barriers.

Other key DIFS staff serve on other NAIC committee groups and task forces, ensuring that Michigan is represented in decision making across the NAIC. For more information about the NAIC, visit NAIC.org.
