Certification Process Changes

The State of Michigan Lead Certification Program is updating its initial certification and renewal processes. These changes will affect all certified lead professionals.

Renewal Process Changes

Beginning March 31, 2027, all requirements for the three-year renewal process must be completed by the March 31 renewal deadline. Your three-year renewal date is listed on your current lead professional card under “Training and Exam Due Date.”

To complete the three-year renewal process, you must:

  • Submit a completed renewal application.
  • Complete and pass the required refresher training for your discipline(s).
  • Pay all required renewal fees.
  • Pass the state certification exam.

All requirements must be completed by March 31, 2027.

If you do not complete the three-year renewal process by your Training and Exam Due Date, your certification status will become EXPIRED. To become certified again, you must complete the initial certification process, including:

  • Submitting a completed initial application.
  • Completing and passing the required initial training for your discipline(s).
  • Paying all required initial certification fees.
  • Passing the state certification exam.

No exceptions will be granted for late renewals, including situations where refresher courses are cancelled.

Please note that the three-year renewal date is different from the annual renewal date. You must continue to renew your certification annually to maintain active status. If your annual certification is not renewed, your certification status will become LAPSED, and you may not perform lead-related work.

To prepare for these changes, the renewal period was expanded in 2025 from October 1 through March 31. This expanded renewal period is now permanent. The next renewal period will open Oct. 1, 2026, and will close March 31, 2027.

Initial Certification Process Changes

Beginning Oct. 1, 2026, certification fees will change from a semiannual discount structure to a quarterly discount structure.

As stated above, professionals who do not complete the three-year renewal process by the March 31 deadline will have an EXPIRED certification and must complete the initial certification process to become certified again.

Professionals seeking certification through the initial process will use the new quarterly discount fee structure shown below.
