In order to take the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE), an applicant must register with the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME). The NBVME will determine the eligibility of all applicants for the exam.
PLEASE NOTE: Michigan applicants must complete both a NAVLE and a Michigan NAVLE application. The Michigan NAVLE application must be submitted to the NBVME in order to have your NAVLE scores reported to the Michigan Board. The NAVLE application is available at www.nbvme.org. Click on the date you want to take the exam on the page titled "Information for NAVLE Candidates" and then on "On-line NAVLE Applications". The Michigan NAVLE application is also available at www.nbvme.org. Click on "Information for NAVLE Candidates" and then on the link for Michigan candidates at the bottom of that page.
The NAVLE application and the Michigan NAVLE application forms and fees must be received by the NBVME by the deadline dates indicated below. You can either apply online or download the application forms and send them to NBVME through the mail. Additional information about the NAVLE Examination is available at www.nbvme.org.
To take the NAVLE, an applicant must:
Have graduated from an AVMA accredited veterinary college.
or
Currently be a student in good standing and within the final 8 months of completing a program leading to a doctorate degree in an AVMA accredited veterinary college.
or
Be enrolled in the certification program of the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Once eligibility has been determined for the exam, you will be notified by NBVME. You will then receive a scheduling permit approximately 45 days before the exam testing window. Information on how to contact the testing center and schedule an exam will be provided.
NBVME will notify applicants about the results of the exam. Results are reported to the Michigan Board approximately 4-6 weeks following the close of the testing window.
Important Notice
Candidates may take the NAVLE for the first time during the testing window 8 months prior to their expected graduation date from veterinary school.
