John Gorney is the Public Works Director for the City of Grand Rapids. He and his wife Kelly of 35 years are from the Grand Rapids area, where they raised five children and are now grandparents to four grandchildren.
John has served in the Public Works field for 32 years, starting out as a Maintenance Worker and progressing through the positions of Equipment Operator, Crew Leader, Supervisor, Superintendent, Manager, and Director. John previously served 14 years at the City of Kentwood, 7 of those as Public Works Director. He was the American Public Works Association (APWA) Michigan Chapter President in 2013/2014 and has served since 2009 on the APWA Midwest Michigan Branch Board as a Trustee, Treasurer, Vice President, President, and Past President. John is currently the chair of the APWA Midwest Michigan Branch Snowplow Roadeo Planning Committee, a position he has held since 2010. He also chairs Michigan’s Public Works Academy Planning Committee and the Michigan Chapter of APWA Education Committee.
