UPDATE: MPSC's public hearing on Consumers Energy's integrated resource plan to be postponed due to COVID-19

The Michigan Public Service Commission today announced it is postponing a public hearing on Consumers Energy's long-range plan for providing electric service, set for this afternoon at Saginaw Valley State University, out of an abundance of caution because employees of the MPSC were potentially exposed to COVID-19.

The hearing was the first of two public meetings at which Commissioners were to hear customer input on Consumers Energy Co.'s integrated resource plan, or IRP, outlining the utility's plans for delivering electricity to its residential and business customers in Michigan. It was to take place this afternoon at Saginaw Valley State University.

Instead, the MPSC will reschedule the in-person hearing for a later date. The Commission plans to proceed, however, with the second, virtual public hearing, set for Monday, Oct. 4, with public participation available through videoconference and phone.

The hearing's purpose is for the Commission to take public comment on Consumers' long-range forecasts for ensuring reliable service over the next 20 years, with specific requirements for reporting 5-, 10- and 15-year projections. IRPs were established under Michigan's 2016 energy laws and are required for each electric utility whose rates are regulated by the MPSC.

The virtual hearing will be Oct. 4, 6-8 p.m. Participation by videoconference is available through this Microsoft Teams hearing link.
