MPSC sets new date for energy assistance fair in Melvindale

The Michigan Public Service Commission today announced that it has set Dec. 15 as the makeup date for a Detroit-area energy assistance fair after snowstorms across lower Michigan forced the cancellation of an earlier date.

The MPSC’s energy assistance fairs have been traveling the state, bringing together representatives from the MPSC and other agencies to help utility customers connect with financial assistance and to hear their thoughts and concerns about energy matters. Customers are able to sign up for energy assistance on site.

The next energy assistance fair, in the Downriver suburb of Melvindale, will be held 4-7 p.m. Dec. 15 at Kessey Fieldhouse, 4300 S. Dearborn St. MPSC Staff and representatives from other local and state agencies — including Consumers Energy, DTE Energy and TrueNorth Community Services — will be on hand.

The energy fair will provide information about assistance for utility customers and give them an opportunity to provide input on issues of energy affordability, accessibility, and the availability of energy assistance programs. Utility customers can learn about available energy assistance programs, payment plans and more, and connect with local organizations providing energy assistance.

The public also may learn about the MPSC’s role in utility access and affordability, share thoughts about what energy affordability means, and how the MPSC can best engage with communities in metro Detroit. The listening sessions are part of the Commission’s Energy Affordability and Accessibility Collaborative (EAAC). The EAAC was launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the Commission directing MPSC staff to convene the EAAC as a means to seek “broad and diverse input from residents, non-profits, utilities, and state agencies to address the affordability of energy, access to low-income energy assistance, customer protections and low-income energy waste reduction services.”
