Media Alert: MVHGR to Host Blue Star and Gold Star Memorial Dedication in Memorial Garden

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids (MVHGR) and the Kent Garden Club (KGC) will host a Blue Star and Gold Star Memorial Dedication Ceremony at 1:00 p.m. on May 14, 2022 at 2950 Monroe Avenue, NE, Grand Rapids.

Remarks will be led by Capt. Paul J. Ryan, U.S. Navy Reserve (Retired); Kate Kooyman, district director for State Senator Winnie Brinks; Kristin Ruther, first vice president of the KGC; Bradley Stek, district representative for Congressman Peter Meijer; Maj. Gen. Gregory J. Vadnais (Retired); Nancy J. Ryan, first vice president of Michigan Garden Clubs; and Chaplain David Kennedy, Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired). The ceremony will include a posting of the colors led by the Union High School JROTC Color Guard and music and Taps led by the Northview High School Band and soloist Brandon Harris.

The Blue Star dedication and unveiling will be led by Monica Taylor, president of Michigan Garden Clubs; Tammi Arends, executive director of the West Michigan Alliance 4 Veterans; and Jacqueline Ransom, president of Blue Star Mothers, Department of Michigan. The Gold Star dedication and unveiling will be led by Monica Taylor, Patrick VanderMolen of KGC and Laura De Roo, president of American Gold Star Mothers, Department of Michigan and Western Michigan Chapter. Robert Troost, a U.S. Army veteran, and resident member of MVHGR will join Tiffany Carr, community engagement coordinator for Michigan Veteran Homes, to accept the memorial dedication on behalf of the home.

While this event is closed to the public, media are invited to attend to capture remarks and the unveiling of the memorials. Media should plan to be in place at the entrance to the new home no later than 12:45 p.m. and follow all COVID-19 protocols on-site.
