Michigan Veteran Homes to Honor Heroes During Veterans Day Activities

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Veteran Homes has announced its upcoming schedule of Veterans Day activities to honor its veteran members and those who served before them.

Michigan Veteran Homes at Chesterfield Township (MVHCT) will host a Veterans Day recognition ceremony at 11 a.m. with remarks led by 1st Lt. Caleb Jenkins of the 127th Wing, Selfridge Air National Guard Base; Chesterfield Township Supervisor Brad Kersten; Pat Patterson, veterans affairs volunteer service representative for MVHCT and events chairman and convention director for the State of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW); Bill Wojcik, veterans affairs volunteer service officer for MVHCT and member of VFW Post #6691 in Fraser; and Father John Maksym of St. Peter Catholic Church in Mount Clemens. A special candlelight luncheon and veteran member tribute slideshow will follow the ceremony. On Friday, November 10, three 1st grade classrooms from Naldrett Elementary will visit the Home to sing patriotic songs and pass out flags to veteran members. Later in the day, veteran members and staff will be attending a special Veterans Day Dinner at LakePoint Community Church in Oxford.

Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids (MVHGR) in partnership with Zero Day will host their Veterans Day 5 Remembrance Walk, 5K and 5-Mile Run. The 5-mile run will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the 5K at 8:50 a.m. and the 0.5K remembrance walk at 8:55 a.m. Participants, volunteers and spectators are invited to join veteran members and staff in the Home’s bistro for a community pancake breakfast from 8:30 – 11 a.m. The race and pancake breakfast are open to the public. Registration for the race is open and will accommodate walk ups the morning of the event. To register, sign up here: Veterans Day 5. Directly following the race, veteran members will enjoy a veteran’s appreciation bingo sponsored by the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and enjoy a gourmet dessert and coffee bar. On Friday, November 10, the Belmont Armory 126th Army Band Woodwind Ensemble will perform for veteran members at 10:30 a.m. followed by a veteran’s appreciation bingo hosted by the Meijer Community Giving Committee Club and Meijer mVets in the Grand River Room at 1:30 p.m.

Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti (MVHDJJ) will host a special Veterans Day ceremony for members in their chapel at 11 a.m. The ceremony will include remarks by Ron Oja, administrator for MVHDJJ; U.S. Army Veteran LTC Thomas Perry of Amvets Post 122; and U.S. Air Force Veteran and MVHDJJ Chaplain Dr. Jim Elenbaas. The ceremony will include a posting of the colors led by the Northern Michigan University (NMU) Army ROTC Color Guard with music by soloist Lois Westman of Amvets Auxiliary Unit 122. The ceremony is sponsored by Amvets Post 122 of Ishpeming. Following the ceremony, veteran members will enjoy a game of Big Buck$ Bingo sponsored by Cold Snap & Jon’s Augo, a visit from the NMU Army ROTC and Chocolay Girl Scout Troop and a special Veterans Day dinner from dietary services and a special dessert provided by the Michigan Elks Association.
