2026 Fostering Futures Event - Detroit

2026 Fostering Futures Making a Difference Gala - Detroit

Event Highlights

Governor Gretchen Whitmer shared a special video message offering words of encouragement and highlighted the importance of supporting students who have experienced foster care.

Keynote speaker, Shana Risby, shared a powerful and personal message shaped by her own experience in foster care. Her words championed the importance of the Fostering Futures Scholarship and the opportunities it provides for students as they pursue their educational goals. Shana spoke candidly about perseverance, overcoming fear, and finding the strength to keep moving forward.  Shana’s story demonstrates what is possible when youth are surrounded by love, encouragement, opportunities, and support.

Featured Scholar, Issah Idris, shared his remarkable journey and the impact that educational opportunities and a strong support system have on a student’s life.

One of the evening’s most meaningful moments was the presentation of the 2026 Difference Maker Award, honoring the late Donald Fews, a devoted champion of fostering and an advocate for children and families. Donald's family graciously accepted the award on his behalf as we celebrated his legacy, service, and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

On behalf of the Fostering Futures Scholarship team, thank you to all who made the event a great success. Your generous support helps students who have experienced foster care pursue their educational goals and move toward futures filled with opportunity and possibility.
