MiLEAP Awards $200,000 College Success Grant to Washtenaw Community College to Expand Free Textbook Support for Students

Funding Part of Ongoing $45 Million Initiative to Improve Student Success Across Michigan's Institutions, Support State’s Sixty By 30 Goal

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) today announced that Washtenaw Community College (WCC) has been awarded a $200,000 College Success Grant to expand its Open Educational Resources (OER) program, which provides students with free digital textbooks and other low-cost learning materials to make college more affordable.

“Textbook costs shouldn’t stand in the way of a student’s success,” said Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, director of MiLEAP. “Open Educational Resources make college more affordable by allowing faculty to develop free or low-cost materials in place of traditional textbooks, saving students thousands while providing high-quality, accessible learning tools. Through this College Success Grant, MiLEAP is investing in Washtenaw's efforts to help more students stay on track, complete their programs and reach their career goals.”

The $200,000 award is part MiLEAP’s $45 million Student Success Grant program, the state’s largest-ever initiative aimed at increasing student success rates at higher education institutions across Michigan. This cycle, 11 institutions were awarded a total of nearly $5 million in College Success Grant funding to support campus reforms that increase retention and graduation rates through initiatives such as academic advising improvements, data-driven interventions, streamlined pathways to completion and cost-reduction strategies.

Since 2017, WCC’S OER program has helped thousands of students earn a degree or skills certificate with little or no textbook costs, a total savings of more than $16 million. This fall, 20 of the college’s academic departments are offering 410 course sections that use OER materials, saving students an estimated $1.1 million in textbook expenses this semester alone.

“The OER program aligns perfectly with our mission to provide affordable and accessible education,” said Dr. Rose B. Bellanca, WCC president. “We are grateful for this new College Success Grant from the state to help us expand our program and continue to serve our students in the best way possible.”

WCC’s grant builds on the growing impact of the Student Success Grant program, through which the department has already awarded more than $36 million in competitive funding. The program includes multiple grant categories – Quick Start Grants, College Success Grants, Barrier Removal: Direct to Students, Barrier Removal: Growing Institutional Capacity, and Reconnect Community Action Grants – each designed to help colleges and universities remove obstacles that prevent students from completing their education.

The initiative will help the state achieve its Sixty by 30 goal of 60% of adults with a skill certificate or degree by 2030 and ensure more Michiganders can earn the credentials needed to succeed in high-demand, good-paying jobs.
