MICHIGAN COMMISSION ON LAW ENFORCEMENT STANDARDS AND DETROIT POLICE DEPARTMENT ADDRESS LICENSING ISSUES

LANSING, MICH.  – The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards is working with the Detroit Police Department (DPD) to resolve an issue where it appears several officers have been working without active law enforcement officer licenses. They were hired between November 2019 and August of 2024. Initial indications suggest DPD did not request reactivation of these officer’s law enforcement licenses when they were hired or rehired. The investigation is ongoing and at this point involves at least 32 officers.

If an officer separates employment for any reason, their license is rendered inactive by operation of law. An agency that wants to reactivate an inactive license is responsible to submit a request to the Commission. The request for reactivation must include an executed oath of office and an attestation by the agency that the individual meets the Commission’s licensing standards.

State law prohibits an individual whose license is rendered void by a court order or operation of law, or is inactive, lapsed, or revoked, cannot exercise the law enforcement authority described in the laws of this state.

On a case-by-case basis, the Commission will review the status of affected officers to determine if they are eligible for reactivation of their law enforcement licenses. The Commission is collaborating with DPD to audit its entire roster and ensure all officers are actively licensed.

Agencies are required to perform an audit each January to confirm their rosters and report other required information to the Commission. Additionally, each agency must notify the Commission within 3 business days throughout the year if an officer is hired, separated, or has their law enforcement authority removed.

The Commission has informed Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy of this situation.
