PA 166 of 2022: Public Safety Grant Programs

A State of Michigan budget supplemental act has provided for six new grant programs to be administered by MCOLES.

MCOLES and the CPL Law

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) is responsible for certifying firearm instructors and instructional programs for the purpose of providing pistol safety training to concealed pistol license applicants as required in Public Act 381 of 2000.

Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA)

The Michigan Retired Law Enforcement Officer's Firearm Carry Act became effective in Michigan on March 31, 2009.  This act enables qualified law enforcement officers to carry under the provisions of the federal Law Enforcement Officer's Safety Act (LEOSA) and Michigan law.

Licensed Private Security Police Officers

Public Act 330 was first enacted in 1968 over concerns about the regulation and training of security guards. The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) is responsible for administering the functions of PA 330 of 1968 as it relates to private security police.

Public Safety Officer Benefit Act

The Public Safety Officer Benefit Act provides for a one-time payment of $25,000 for the care of a public safety officer permanently and totally disabled in the line of duty. In the event the public safety officer was killed in the line of duty, the spouse, children, or estate of the officer may be eligible for the one-time payment of $25,000.

Michigan's Speed Measurement Standards

Michigan Speed Measurement Training

As part of this national shift to a more formalized system for maintaining the integrity of speed measurement enforcement, and to support the strategic initiatives of NHTSA, Michigan's Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) created a partnership with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) to establish formal standards for speed measurement operators and instructors in Michigan.

Speed Measurement Standards

The speed measurement standards are a compilation of work done by various content specialists and practitioners.  MCOLES staff facilitated several work sessions in order to take full advantage of the expertise of those in Michigan who possess the requisite knowledge and experience in law enforcement, speed measurement enforcement, training, and traffic services.
