About the Michigan Justice Training Fund

The Michigan Justice Training Fund (MJTF) is supported through a percentage of the Michigan Justice System Fund. Justice System Fund revenue comes from various assessments related to court penalties. When a person is found guilty of a civil infraction, misdemeanor, or felony, the individual is required to pay a series of fines that are transmitted to the Justice System Fund. Of these fines, the first $10 is deposited in the Secondary Road Patrol and Training fund, of which MCOLES receives 5.65% for Training to Locals reimbursements. Following that, of the remaining Justice System Fund revenue MCOLES receives 11.84% deposited into the Michigan Justice Training Fund.

The Commission is mandated by the Act to distribute 60 percent of the fund revenue semi-annually in what has come to be known as the law enforcement distribution (LED). These monies are provided to law enforcement agencies to provide for direct costs in support of in-service training for licensed law enforcement officers. Distributions are made on a per-full time equivalent (FTE) basis to eligible agencies determined by total hours worked by officers in the prior calendar year.
