Licensing Eligibility Extension Requests
Under the MCOLES Act, licensing eligibility extensions may only be granted following a request to and an approval from the Commission’s executive director to enable an agency to complete screening for a candidate.
Extensions can only be considered under the following two circumstances:
- Individuals who have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy and passed the Law Enforcement Officer Licensing Exam but were not screened, employed, and given an oath of office by an agency within their 1-year period of licensing eligibility.
- Individuals who have successfully completed the Recognition of Prior Basic Law Enforcement Training and Experience (RPTE) program including the licensing exam but were not screened, employed, and given an oath of office by an agency within their 12-month period of licensing eligibility.
Only one licensing eligibility extension can be granted for an eligible, approved individual (90-day extension for basic law enforcement training academy graduates or 3-month extension for RPTE graduates). The extension starts from the date the individual’s initial licensing eligibility timeframe expires.
By statute, a licensing eligibility request cannot be granted for an individual whose license has lapsed. They would have to be accepted to successfully complete RPTE to regain licensing eligibility.
A completed Licensing Eligibility Extension Request form must be submitted to MSP-MCOLES-Licensing@michigan.gov for review and processing by an agency seeking and extension to complete the screening of a candidate.
