Rule 152 (1)


1. The temperature in child use areas must be maintained at a safe and comfortable level.

RATIONALE

Temperature control supports the comfort and health of children and staff.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Temperatures should remain comfortable and healthy for all occupants.

BEST PRACTICE

Place thermometers in each activity area, mounted two feet above the floor.

2. Indoor temperature must be at least 68°F at a point two feet above the floor.

3. If indoor temperatures exceed 82°F, the center must take measures to cool children.

RATIONALE

High heat and humidity increase risks of mold, respiratory irritation, and heat‑related illness.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Fans and screened windows may be used for ventilation. Children must not have access to fans.

Signs of heat exhaustion include quietness, lethargy, pale skin, thirst, and dizziness.

Seek medical help if a child is flushed, limp, unresponsive, or very hot.
