Sale Of Detroit Medical Center Hospitals To Vanguard Health Systems

In late 2010, the Detroit Medical Center (DMC), a Michigan charitable, nonprofit hospital system, transferred substantially all its hospital facilities to Vanguard Health Systems, Inc. (VHS). The terms of this complex transaction included Vanguard's commitments to continue providing charity care, to make substantial capital investments in projects at DMC's main campus, and to assume responsibility for DMC's heavy debt obligations.

The Attorney General's Office closely reviewed the proposal and approved the sale, subject to several conditions, which are explained in the Attorney General's Report on the Sale of DMC to Vanguard.

Patients with complaints about DMC's quality of service or billing practices, including DMC's charity care policy, may call DMC's Compliance Hotline at 866-683-2427.
