The Foundation of Lifelong Learning

Early childhood is where the education journey begins. The experiences children have in their earliest years shape how they learn, develop, and enter kindergarten, establishing a foundation that carries forward through K-12, postsecondary education, and eventually the workforce. Michigan is committed to building the brightest future possible for each and every child. That means building an early childhood system that supports children and families across the full span of early learning – from early intervention and family supports to child care, literacy, PreK, and kindergarten readiness – so every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Impact Highlights

Expanded access and affordability — Michigan continues to reduce early learning costs for families, with more than 50,000 children accessing low‑ or no‑cost child care, 66,000 four‑year‑olds enrolled in PreK for All, and over 1,200 families supported through MI Tri‑Share.
Strengthened early learning continuum — Strong Beginnings now operates across 31 ISDs, and 75 new PreK spaces are being added through the Home-Based Pilot, expanding high‑quality options for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
Enhanced early childhood workforce capacity — More than 11,500 educators have earned new degrees, credentials, and certifications, supported by initiatives including T.E.A.C.H., apprenticeships, the $4.4M Nurture Benefits pilot, and the Child Care Business Essentials Hub.
