Frequently Asked Questions

  • What kinds of child care are covered with MI Tri-Share?

MI Tri-Share covers child care licensed in Michigan. Depending on the participating employer's specific parameters, the benefit can cover full-time and part-time care, preschool, before and after school care, summer care, summer camps, or a combination of these choices. For more information, visit MiTriShare.org/Employees.

  • What are the income eligibility requirements for employees of employers offering the MI Tri-Share benefit?

Employee eligibility is determined based on the employee’s household size and gross monthly income (before tax) for all adults from all sources. Currently, employees must have a household income between 200%-400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and not otherwise eligible for Michigan's Child Development and Care scholarship program. For more information, visit MiTriShare.org/Employees.

  • What makes an employer eligible to offer the MI Tri-Share benefit?

Participating employers must be based or have an office in Michigan. Eligible employers may be of any size and any sector. For more information, visit MiTriShare.org/Employers.

  • How much does a participating employer contribute per eligible employee with MI Tri-Share?

An employer participating in the MI Tri-Share benefit agrees to contribute one-third of the actual cost of child care for one or more of an approved employee’s children for at least one year (unless the employee leaves the employer or otherwise drops out of the program before the year ends). The employer sets their initial investment amount and the MI Tri-Share program helps determine how many child care slots that will cover for one year based on the current rates in the employer's area. For more information, visit MiTriShare.org/Employers.

  • Who assesses employee eligibility for MI-Tri-Share?

Employees of participating employers complete the MI Tri-Share application at MITriShare.org. MI Tri-Share’s statewide administrative partner works directly with the employee to collect income verification documentation and determine benefit eligibility. For more information, visit MiTriShare.org/Employers.

  • Are MI Tri-Share participating employers or accepted eligible employees required to use certain child care providers?

No, preserving a family's ability to choose their own licensed child care is a central principle of MI Tri-Share. The benefit only requires that the child care provider be located and licensed in Michigan. For more information, visit MiTriShare.org/Employers or MiTriShare.org/Employees.

  • How long can employees receive the MI Tri-Share Child Care benefit?

The participating employer determines how long each employee will be offered the benefit, as long as it is offered for at least one year (unless the employee leaves the employer or otherwise drops out of the program before the year ends). A participating employee’s household income will be reassessed for eligibility every two years from initial entry into the program unless their employer has specified a shorter timeframe. For more information, visit MiTriShare.org/Employers.

  • How is the MI Tri-Share employee portion collected?

The employee's third is collected by the employer through payroll deduction unless a different collection method is established by the participating employer. For more information, visit MiTriShare.org/Employers.

  • What if an employee's employment status changes while using MI Tri-Share?

MI Tri-Share is an employer-based benefit. If employment status changes, the employee and employer will need to immediately inform the MI Tri-Share program. The employee will be responsible for 100% of their care costs from the termination date, regardless of who initiated the change. For more information, visit MiTriShare.org/Employers or MiTriShare.org/Employees.
