MVAA recovers more than $100 million for Michigan veterans and their families
LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) has announced that, since October 2015, more than $100 million in federal VA benefits has been recovered for Michigan veterans and their families by the agency's Veteran Service Officer (VSO) program. Veterans can connect with this free service by calling 1-800-MICH-VET (642-4838) or by visiting Michigan.gov/MVAA.
"We are proud that MVAA VSOs have directly recovered more than $100 million for Michigan veterans and their families," said MVAA Director Brian L. Love. "With a maximum of only five VSOs employed by the agency at any one time, this is a milestone for the veterans we service. These are lifechanging recoveries for the brave men and women who served our state and nation. MVAA looks forward to continuing to work with our county, state, and federal partners to ensure that every Michigan veteran gets what they earned."
Accredited VSOs are able to help veterans and their families apply for the VA benefits they earned with their service to the nation. VSOs can also assist veterans with a benefits review to ensure that they are receiving everything to which they are entitled. Recent examples of MVAA VSO assistance can be found in the 2024 MVAA Annual Report.
MVAA VSOs are currently located in:
- Alpena
- Grand Rapids
- Livonia
- Marquette
Veterans and dependents can choose any Veteran Service Officer or VA Benefits Counselor on the list for their county of residence, regardless of affiliation. A full list of VSOs statewide is also available at Michigan.gov/VSO.
MVAA also offers other free services to veterans including free copies of their DD-214 discharge documents. For more information about that program, visit Michigan.gov/DD214.
