Michigan Veteran & Dependent Benefits
Michigan is committed to honoring service members, veterans and their dependents by offering comprehensive benefits that support financial stability, health, education and quality of life. The Great Lakes State provides opportunities to live affordably, raise a family, work and retire.

Burial
Veterans, their spouse or surviving spouse who meet residency and asset limits, may qualify for a $300 burial expense paid by the County Board of Commissioners, or the Board of County Auditors.

Education
- Veterans and active-duty members receive in-state tuition, regardless of their state of residency or duty status.
- Michigan will award a high school diploma to war-time veterans who left high school before receiving their diploma to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.
- Michigan National Guard State Tuition Assistance Program (MINGSTAP) provides tuition assistance to members of the Michigan National Guard who are attending any public or private college, university, vocational school, technical school or trade school located in Michigan.
- The Children of Veterans Tuition Grant provides undergraduate tuition assistance to students who are the natural or adopted child of a qualified Michigan veteran that has died or become totally and permanently disabled due to a service-connected illness or injury, or missing in action (MIA), because of military service.
- Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency Veteran-Friendly School program recognizes colleges, universities and training facilities that are dedicated to meeting the unique needs of service members and veterans.

Employment and Entrepreneurship
- Veterans and their spouses receive preference for initial employment with the State of Michigan.
- Michigan Veterans’ Employment Services (VES) at Michigan Works! Service Centers provides individualized career and training-related services.
- Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency Veteran-Friendly Employer program recognizes employers that commit to military veteran recruitment, training and retention practices.
- Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) offers service members, veterans and spouses to use military experience towards licensing requirements, exemption on renewal fees and continues educational requirements while on active duty and waiver on initial license or registration processing fees.
- Michigan Veteran Connector program is a network of healthcare institutions, businesses and community members throughout the state of Michigan who have committed to assisting veterans and their loved ones with connecting to their benefits.
- VetBiz Central is a one-stop shop for transitioning service members, veterans and family members looking to start, purchase or grow a business.
- Michigan will waive Commercial Driver License (CDL) knowledge skills test and on-road driving skills test requirements for service members and veterans based on their military training and experience.

Financial and Legal Assistance
- The Michigan Veterans Trust Fund (MVTF) is intended to help veterans overcome an unforeseen situation causing a temporary or short-term financial emergency or hardship that a grant will resolve and for which the applicant can demonstrate the ability to meet future expenses.
- The MVTF has partnered with GreenPath Financial Wellness Inc., a nonprofit financial counseling organization, to provide financial counseling services to Michigan veterans.
- Michigan Attorney General’s Office provides a Military and Veterans Legal Services Guide that lists numerous legal programs across the state.

Housing
- There are three Michigan Veteran Homes across the state of Michigan that offer home-like settings and skilled nursing care with the opportunity to live independently as possible.
- HUD VASH (Veterans Administration Supportive Housing) program combines HUD Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) at its medical centers and in the community.
- The Michigan Veteran Homelessness Prevention Grant (MiVHPG) funding is made available to provide financial assistance to Michigan-based nonprofit organizations that assist service members, veterans, and their families who are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing homelessness.

Incarcerated VeteransMichigan Incarcerated Veterans' In-Reach Program (MIVIP) provides pre-release education, employment assistance and career guidance to incarcerated Veterans at seven correctional facilities in Michigan

Income and Property Taxes
- Active-duty and retired military pay is exempt from individual income tax.
- Military disability retirement pay received as a pension, annuity or similar allowance for personal injury or sickness resulting from active service in the U.S. Armed Forces is not included in taxable income.
- Michigan Disabled Veteran Homestead Property Tax Exemption offers a total property tax exemption of the primary residence that is owned and occupied by an eligible disabled veterans or their surviving spouse.
- Military pensions and social security benefits are exempt from tax.

Recreation
- Michigan has a broad array of accessible recreation opportunities including campgrounds, cabins, hunting, fishing, trails and beaches.
- Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offer ‘Fireworks Free Fourth of July’ for service members and veterans seeking a quieter holiday.
- Michigan full-time, active duty members and veterans with a disability are eligible to obtain any hunting or fishing license that does not require a separate application free of charge.
- Veterans who are 100% permanently and totally disabled receive free entry to state parks.
- Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors (MiOFO) provides outdoor recreation opportunities to wounded veterans to coordinate a support network through connecting with nature.

Transportation
- Michigan offers a variety of military and veteran license plates – veterans with at least a 50% disability rating may be eligible to register one vehicle with a disabled veteran standard license plate for free.
- Veterans with a total or permanent disability may receive a free disabled veteran permanent plate.
- Ex-prisoners of war, regardless of disability rating, are eligible for a reduced cost license plate.
